Shakespeare Champion Lily Bard Mysteries Book 2 Charlaine Harris 9780312170059 Books

I must say, this is the worst of the Lily Bard books. The plot starts strong with the murder of Del Packard and the mystery surrounding his death. Then it degenerates into a whole black versus white racial tension thing, complete with a church bombing. Not only that, Lily comes across as completely unlikable in this book, at least to me. The "tough girl trying to move on with her life" that is present in the rest of the series falters here and she just looks more like "suspicious, bitter b***h" and I felt no involvement with her character at all.

Also, big negative for the editor on this one. Did anyone else notice that Lily's sister is referred to as Serena a few times in this book, when in actuality, her name is VARENA?

For anyone who hasn't read the Lily Bard books yet, start with Book One and skip this one!

***SPOILER ALERT***
And let's be serious here - Mookie ends up getting shot through the chest with an arrow in the final showdown? Really? It's just very surreal and unrealistic.

Shakespeare Champion Lily Bard Mysteries Book 2 Charlaine Harris 9780312170059 Books Reviews

I am very glad I took the lead from a fellow LibraryThing-er's encouragement and gave the Lily Bard mysteries another shot (thanks Tad!); Shakespeare's Champion did not fail to deliver. Harris' style is comfortable and unassuming, and she really shows her strengths as a popular fiction writer with this series. While the events of Shakespeare's Champion - like Lily's own history - are rather extraordinary, Harris doesn't try to over-sensationalize the plot, and instead lets extreme actions and events speak for themselves. Harris shows confidence in her readers by allowing them to respond in their own way, without abusing literary devices that would only function to shove specific emotional reactions down their throats. Like much of Harris' work, Shakespeare's Champion does not shy away from "hot topics" such as rape and racial relations; the plot of the novel itself focuses on several race-related murders and terrorist events. The book is refreshingly unapologetic, and maintains a kind of grace when dealing with the uglier side of a community.

This is not to say that Shakespeare's Champion is overly-deep; the book is still a popular novel, and is intended to entertain through a sequence of extraordinary events and personal conquests. Lily has turned out to be a very interestingly developed character, and I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the series, Shakespeare's Christmas.
It's well-written as usual with this author, with consistent characterizations. Lily gets involved in a lot of violent encounters but it's plot-driven. Still uncomfortable to read.
This is the second book in the Lily Bard Mystery series.

The small town of Shakespeare Arkansas is experiencing some severe race related issues. Flyers of a white supremacy theme are being placed on the windshields of the citizens and three unsolved murders seem to be connected.

Lily Bard, the town maid, happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and is gaining quiet admiration from one racial group, while at the same time getting some hostility from the other. When things get more dangerous and Lily and some of her friends are hurt, she begins to try to piece together the bizarre happenings in Shakespeare.

There were a few issues I had with this story. From the very beginning Ms. Harris introduces comments and references to a fight Lily had been in. Well, I busted out book one thinking I had missed something, I had no clue what she was talking about. Then finally at about page 62 or so she describes what went down.

Then she hints to a certain familiarity between Lily and a newcomer to the town. Little remarks here and there making me wonder what the heck I was missing, then finally on page 149 she clears that up. It really drove me nuts being on the outside of these little secrets and I think it was unnecessary. I don't understand why we had to be in the dark so long waiting to be let in on the important background facts of the story.

Also, there is an unresolved story regarding a piece of jewelry, I really didn't get what that was about. Maybe I am dense, but I read and reread that part of the story and I still don't get it. If anyone can enlighten me I would be most grateful!

Despite the few flaws, which are probably due to my lack of patience more than anything else, I really enjoyed this book. Charlaine Harris wrote another gripping mystery that is filled to the brim with entertainment. She created a complex tale involving racial tensions and hate crimes, small town secrets and plenty of twists and turns. With the introduction of some new characters, the personal life of Lily was enhanced. Enjoy!

Charlaine Harris has written another gripping novel, but this one seems to have had a lack of interest from the copy-editing department. When will publishers realize that this really annoys the reader? Especially at this high a price, it detracts from the enjoyment of the story to have to stop and think, "Wait, what? What does the author really mean to say here?"
I have read all the Charlaine Harris series and have enjoyed each and every one. I am just curious why Lily Bard's sister is named Varena in the first book and Serena in the second. In the third book her sister is again Varena. Anyone else notice this?
