A rich and thought-provoking page-turner based on the life of Wilhelm Reich, who claimed to have created life, cured cancer, controlled weather, shot down space ships, and powered motors—all by harnessing the power of sexual energy.

Wilhelm Reich was censured by the United States government, prohibited from ever speaking of the energy source he claimed to have discovered, and thrown into prison, where he died under suspicious circumstances mere days before his parole hearing. A United States Federal Court ordered all of his books burned, despite protests from the American Civil Liberties Union.

I enjoyed reading this book. Let me start by pointing out an error in the description of the book on this site. The Orgone Energy has nothing much to do with "sexual" energy. It has to do with "Life" energy as Reich was calling it. Nevertheless, it seems that Reich had various sexual problems and suffered from some deviations in that respect (according to the book). But, his research into Orgone Energy could be related to the works of Maxwell, Tesla and Einstein. It turns out that Reich stumbled across the suspected local violation of 2nd Law of Thermodynamics which was initially pointed out by Maxwell and later Tesla, long before Reich. Tesla actually wanted to utilize these observations in creating a sort of "Zero Point Energy" power generating device. He claimed that vacuum is full of energy and that it is only a matter of time when we would be able to learn how to harness it. Reich supposedly stumbled upon some of the effects that could be related to these observations. He lacked advanced knowledge of physics and math, so it was very hard for him to make rigorous investigations, but he seems to have been good at doing various experiments with "Orgone Energy". At the end of his life he supposedly worked on anti-gravity principles. In my view that would be more like implementing the motor that would use Zero Point Energy so it would appear to the observer as if it defies gravity, while in reality it would just use the large amount of energy for propulsion that would come "for free" or "outside of the system of observation". In doing so it would violate the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics locally.

The real value of this book is that it is one of the few that exposes the vicious Witch-hunt against Reich orchestrated by FDA and possibly J. Edgar Hoover. It culminated in book-burning and serious violations of Reich human rights which resulted in his death in prison. It was one of the examples where a totalitarian elements in a government would violate free speech rights and to make it even worse, elevate themselves as judges of the scientific research and scientific results. As Reich pointed out, Courts should not be those that were supposed to be deciding about the value of scientific research. The book also points out how Reich never really claimed that his Orgone Accumulators can cure cancer and was asking his students to refrain from such claims that could only hurt their work. This was later used by FDA to "justify" their actions (through falsifying evidence, etc.) Reich was put in jail based on technicalities and false evidence.

In summary, Reich did spend considerable time doing psychiatric research that involved controversial topics, like sexuality and orgasm. However, the research into the Origins of Life and Life Energy, i.e. Orgone did not have much to do with it. That was a more fundamental research and this book in my opinion makes this distinction very clear. It also provides a colorful portrait of a tragic figure in science that was viciously destroyed and "killed" by bureaucracy of the "most advanced democracy" in the world. The book also contains some elements of science fiction and conspiracy, but who knows, maybe it was not all fiction. Some of it, at least, could be true...

The Orgone Experiment eBook J P Befumo Reviews

I really enjoyed this little fiction book about Wilhelm Reichs life. I can only recommend it, it made me laugh and it gave me a good impression of Reich and some funny pictures in my head, seeing Reich in his Laboratory, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall back then!

If you have the slightest interest in Wilhelm Reich I suggest you read this, "fiction" or not.

The book can be read easily and enjoyed. I don't know how many details about the life of Wilhelm Reich have been changed to make the book more interesting and readable. Anyhow those interested in Wilhelm Reich will enjoy reading it.
