Amy and Luke have survived four months in a savage land completely disrupted by the massive power outage, but this last leg of their journey will demand all of their courage as the pair navigate a desperate landscape. Now, new factions begin to take action, and sudden violence signals a change in someone's policies. As they begin this last sprint across a war-torn countryside, Luke will need to reach deep for his last ounce of determination if he intends to ever make it home alive.

Learn more about Luke's past and find out some stunning truths about the government's plans for a future America. What is the endgame, and who will live to see it unfold? And finally, will Luke and Amy's love endure, or will their travels together end with a bullet? Disclaimer Despite the relative youth of the two main characters, this is not a series aimed at the young adult crowd. This story, like the others in the series, address mature themes. This is the third book in a series that contains examples of gun violence, casual profanity, some mature sexual content, and references to drug use and underage drinking.

Well imho, William Allen has done it again! The third book is another excellent addition to this series. The continuing adventures of Luke and Amy "Landon" are getting even better with each book. I have read all the books in this series and can hardly wait for book four, to learn how the things work out.

I purchased the first book in the series (Walking in the Rain, Surviving the Fall) back in January of this year ... and was hooked from the very first page. He hits hard and doesn't let up. If you like intense, character-driven action and suspense, then William Allen is an author you should take a look at. I will also add that he seems to know his weapons systems and terms as well as has a grasp on military vernacular and a solid working knowledge.

I do not want to give out any spoilers, but I will say that the best laid plans of mice and men, often go awry. Luke's (and his friends) plans go awry almost from the very beginning and of course things heat up. Book 3 changes the focus somewhat to the coming battle(s) to be fought for control of America after the CME.

The last thing I will say is that about Luke, Amy, Lori and Summer, is that they make new friends and find new enemies on the way to McAlester, OK, and pick up some new and interesting items along the way. Some of their new friends are killed along the way, but their enemies pay a stiff price.

You can not go wrong with this book, the price is well worth it, imho. I have read books that cost more, but were not worth the price.

Hard Rain Falling (Audible Audio Edition) William Allen Pat Young Audible Studios Books Reviews

Another great read by Allen. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know what's in the book.

This one has Luke and Amy, an Amy he considers to be his fiancée, still on the way to Texas and Luke's home.

They have left the Keller homestead and are now at Fort Chaffee home of the command for the Oklahoma National Guard. Both Luke and Amy are listed as contractors so they get to keep their guns. No way was Luke going anywhere with out his guns and neither was Amy. It doesn't pay to go anywhere unarmed in the new America.

Luke and Amy are traveling with Lori and her sister Summer. They will be dropping those two off at their home and then Luke hopes to head for Texas and his family.

Luke meets with Colonel Hotchkins who's in charge of the Guard and Luke tells him about the camp outside Jefferson City. A camp that was more of an interment camp than a refuge camp. A camp where girls were parceled out to the commanders best soldiers, those who had the highest rate of salvage. The commander was one Colonel Paul Abbot.

Hotchkins isn't surprised as he knows some Guard units have disbanded or gone their own way. In fact the Colonel tells Luke all big cities have been over run with looters, rioters and murderers and there are many fleeing the cities into the suburbs and the countryside.

Luke and those with him are doing their best to help out at Chaffee. Loads of vehicles need to be reworked so they run. There are also cleared spaces for planting crops for food. The fort has to be guarded 24/7 and the Commander just doesn't have enough men to guard the entire perimeter. Land mines will be set where there are no guards.

Luke and his girls are summoned to a meeting with a Major Jensen, Captain Vanderpool and Sergeant Hollaran all from the Oklahoma National Guard.

Part of the discussion was the fact that all nuclear reactors had prior warning of the EMP and had been ordered to shut down. They are all mad as hell about the planes that weren't ordered not to fly. The planes that crashed all over the country when the EMP hit. The planes that burned most of Oklahoma City to cinders and killed thousands. They also wonder just what the hell is going on in the Govt. A Govt. that obviously knew what was going to happen. A Govt. that did nothing to prepare anyone for the event. A Govt. that is obviously keeping a low profile and a Homeland Security that has done some unheard of things. All those present have lost all faith in the Govt. and once the Feds crawl out of their bunkers and try to run things they will be in for one rude awakening.

Luke, Amy, Lori and Summer are part of a convoy headed to McAlester which is where the girls need to go. McAlester is home for Lori and Summer. They are supposed to meat a group of guardsmen and have cargo for them. They are ambushed by snipers and Luke's friend Jay Grady is killed. Luke bales out and tells everyone else to stay in the truck. He also orders the other trucks to leave.

Then the lead truck is blown up by an RPG and two more Guardsmen are killed. The other two trucks manage to make a getaway leaving Luke behind. A Luke who will take the fight to the attackers.

So begins another damned fine read by Allen.

This one has Luke, Amy, Lori, Summer, The Govt. that seems to have its own agenda to include the killing of anyone they please including National Guardsmen, the Oklahoma National Guard, The Arkansas National Guard , Camp Gruber that was taken over by Homeland Security after they kicked the guard out of their own base, , and ammo plant that's loaded with ammunition and anything you could use to fight a war with, Lt. Greg Germann with the 1st Battalion, 179th infantry, a very savvy Germann who knows the Fed Govt. is up to something and the States are finally getting their heads out of their collective asses to figure out just what that is, Captain Bisley, a prison full of murderers and death row inmates. drug thugs fighting to free their incarcerated leaders, inmates using weapons that they shouldn't have, their taking over the prison, torture, cannibalism, a trip to McAlester, murder, Lori and Summers brother Scott, a group of neighbors who want what Lori's parents have and murdered to make a grab for it, an Amy who is wounded and thought dead, a Luke who seeks revenge and Luke Messner finally getting home.

Five Stars and then some
First off, third chapter in the saga of Luke & Amy is by far the best one yet. I say 3rd chapter as I'm desperately hoping this isn't just a trilogy, more please! Hats off to William Allen for continuing to mature and fill out the characters most prominent in all 3 Walking in the Rain books. Luke, his girlfriend Amy, and the various National Guard soldiers they join up with are given much more than a one dimensional intro... which is so often the case with this type of book.

Quick recap Solar flare or EMP strike; either way it's clear something has destroyed the infrastructure and power grid worldwide. Without spoiling and giving too much away, Luke continues on his journey to make it home to his parents ranch in Texas, trying to keep a low profile and avoid unnecessary attention. Problem is, in the wasteland of post 21st century America... a young man with his morale code and growing set of skills sticks out like a dandelion in a parking lot.

Luke must decide which of the factors driving him is highest priority, his growing love for Amy, dedication to the friends he rescued back at the Keller Farm (in Book 2), or the unknown condition of his family and homestead. He constantly struggles with that balance, often changing his mind as situations evolve. Mr. Allen weaves new threats and allies into the story in a way that doesn't seem theatrical or improbable, rather quite likely and almost expected events considering the state of the country at this point.

Expect more battles the closer our characters get to the population centers, more enemies, and combat that even pushes Luke past his abilities. I appreciate that the author didn't make Luke into... Well, Skywalker. (Yeah, bad joke). He does get tired, hungry, exhausted, wounded, and lose his temper. All in all, Luke is an "Everyman" we can all relate to, perhaps that's why I fell so under the spell of this series. I also appreciate that William Allen keeps his data detailed enough and realistic that laymen can understand what's happening, but not so nerdy that you get lost in the minutia of 3 pages describing how a water purification system works. Same goes for his military jargon and conversations between military units. Part of it he rubs off as Luke not understanding the more complex communication methods of the military, but the end result is it's quite readable for the average Joe or Jane. Let me know it's a Colt M4 in 5.56, but please spare me the muzzle velocity and bullet weight in grains of the ammo he hand loaded! Excellent balance struck by the author...

Without spoilers, not all the endings are happy but you won't throw your kindle across the room either. If you haven't read the first two books, buy this one but also buy books one and two and start from the beginning. It's totally worth it and will be some of the best SHTF fiction you've read so far. Just be aware, you may stay up till 230AM to finish book three like I did, lots of coffee today!

...until book four, Allen. ;)
