The Poison Artist Jonathan Moore Books
This dark and alluring read is one that demands patience from the reader. Things don’t immediately make sense. Much like walking through thick San Francisco fog, it’s hard to decipher the path that Jonathan Moore is heading down with this story. His words act as a compass, navigating the way through the haze of absinthe, toxicology results, loneliness and obsession. It’s often confusing and a tad bit slow in the beginning, but there was something that kept nagging me - the feeling that I was missing something big. That crucial pieces of the story were being obscured or left out, but why? Just know, when the fog and misty rain clears, the unsettling journey will make sense. You might even find that one of your own theories was correct, like I did.Fresh from a messy breakup, he even has a bloody cut on his head to prove it, Caleb lands in a bar with the intentions of drinking away his problems. An intoxicating woman ends up on the stool next to Caleb and introduces him to her drink of choice - Berth de Joux or absinthe. It’s this brief encounter that becomes the catalyst for the obsession that starts to eat away at his life and corrupt his every thought. It’s honestly kind of insane how obsessed he becomes with Emmeline, but can you blame a guy for being lonely?
His life becomes an endless cycle of drinking, working behind the scenes with his best friend, the chief medical examiner, to figure out how the rash of men found floating in the bay are being killed and trying to track down the elusive Emmeline. There is quite a bit of repetition, especially the endless amount of times the author explains how Berth de Joux is served, but I won’t go so far to say it detracted from the story itself.
There are some gory bits, which I quite enjoyed (what is wrong with me?!) and a pretty great ending to wrap things up. That’s not to say this isn’t quite strange. It’s guaranteed this won’t be everyone’s drink of choice. It’s oddity makes it quite different and in a way that’s sort of refreshing. With that being said, my theory about what was really going on was correct, but that may be because I read a ton of thrillers or maybe I’m just crazy . . . who knows.

The Poison Artist Jonathan Moore Books Reviews
This is a can't-put-down book. I have stayed up way too late on two nights to get on with the story, which Moore dishes up a small morsel at a time, leaving room for a multitude of questions. At 75% read, I hadn't figured it out, and I'm someone who can guess the killer in the first couple of chapters in a book. An outstanding book!
Another all-nighter! Began to figure it out, however, not too far into the book. A couple of characters were not very well developed, but, all in all, it was a fast, kept my attention read.
I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would at the beginning. It was kind of slow and I wanted more explanations for what at first were completely unexplained and unrelated story lines. However, looking back I understand and appreciate the slow build-up of this very clever and suspenseful story. It was worth it. I'm a re-reader and when I was done I started it again almost right away, this time getting everything that was hidden or downplayed before. I'm always happy to find a new author. Very well done, Jonathan Moore!
Beautifully written and perfectly paced, the vortex of The Poison Artist draws you in from the first chapter and does not let go. The story is part police procedural, part mystery, part horror and manages to deliver in all three genres. Each revelation turns the plot in a new, unexpected direction. Excellent descriptions of its San Francisco settings are matched by characters drawn in exquisite detail, especially Caleb and the mysterious Emmeline. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down.
Jonathan Moore writes beautifully, creating atmosphere as dense as the San Francisco fog or as haunting as a beautiful woman's perfume. This is definitely recommended for readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with a strong element of the gothic.
is it really can't be pigeonholed. Is it a mystery? yes. Thriller? yes. Noirish? Yes. Hitchcock influence? Yes. The San Francisco moody atmosphere is spot on, the main character is just right, the supporting characters are well set up. And the woman... you'll just have to see for yourself. This book will get inside your head and if you're like me you'll find yourself thinking about it for days after. Every 4 and 5 star review of this book is right, there are many facets to this story and he handles them well. Enjoy- I'm looking forward to reading more of his works.
Wow, I really struggled to get through this book. Two things made it hard for me.
1. The first half moved very slow for me, and I struggle with books that reference events ( that have happened in the past) to a main character, but the reader is not made aware of the specifics until later in the book.
2. The second half certainly paced much better, but the storyline blurred, and was too hard for me to figure out, was this book horror, fantasy, or a murder mystery.
I read The Dark Room also by this author before reading this book, and I am really glad I did, as I really liked it, which made me like the author, but this book didn't work nearly as well for me.
