While not as well known as the author's "The Princes and the Goblin" or "The Light Princess", it is just as imaginative and delightful. It is taken from the 28th chapter of George McDonald's masterpiece "At the Back of the North Wind" but stands as a separate story because it was told as a story in the longer novel. I would recommend that it be read allowed just as it was told aloud to sick children by a kindly man in it's original form.
This is a wonderful story, with the language as only George Macdonald can do it. Its a classic fairy tale story with all the magic and love anyone could ask for. I highly suggest getting it.
I remembered reading this fairy tale when I was 8 years old- I'm now 28. I am so glad I was able to find it for my daughter! The pacing is slow in the middle but the plot, gorgeous illustrations and sweet ending are worth it.
